Humboldt Soil Harmonics

Keeping your soil in tune with the composition of life

Seeking a Harmonious Ecosystem

What We Do

Humboldt Soil Harmonics offers biological soil analysis to local homeowners, landscapers, farmers, and growers of all kinds.

Ever wonder what’s really going on in your soil? There are millions of microorganisms living right beneath our feet, and they are determining all of the growth we see above the surface! If you want to find out EXACTLY what’s happening within your soil ecosystem, send in a sample, and HSH will provide you with a report of your soil’s biology. This will let you know, precisely, the key organisms in your soil which are driving the results you see in your crops, gardens, and landscapes.

With the report provided, you will be able to grasp if there are any biological components missing or out of balance within the soil food web, as well as the presence of potentially harmful organisms. This is the solution to understanding nutrient cycling, pest & disease issues, and proper soil management. Give us a call or send a message today to find out!

Why it Matters

Benefits of a Healthy Soil Food Web

  • Soil Structure: Microorganisms create glues which build aggregates in the soil, allowing for better water & air flow. Maintain aerobic conditions, avoid water runoff, reduce water use, increase water-holding capacity, and increase rooting depth.

  • Nutrient Retention: When in balance, predators & prey obtain naturally-occurring nutrients in the soil. These nutrients are held in their bodies and are released, either as waste or at the end of their life cycles, making them available to your plants. No need for expensive fertilizers.

  • Weed Control: Create a soil ecosystem which favors the plants you want to grow, and allows them to naturally outcompete any weed species without the need for herbicides.

  • Pest/Disease Suppression: A full soil food web present creates a hostile environment for disease-causing species, and they are easily consumed and outcompeted by beneficial organisms. Microorganisms also cover all aboveground surfaces of your plants, creating a protective barrier against pests. Avoid using pesticides & herbicides.

  • Climate Change: A healthy microbiome sequesters immense amounts of carbon into the soil, and prevents the production and release of harmful greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxides) into the atmosphere.

Why it’s Different

Standard soil analyses provide an interpretation of physical and chemical components of your soil. These results are often used to determine the fertility of the soil as well as the optimum lime and fertilizer requirements for your crop. This interpretation assumes that, if numbers are low, we must utilize inorganic additives.

What is this missing? The biology!

Incorporating these chemical treatments (ex. fertilizing to make up for low quantities of nutrients, gypsum/lime to alter soil pH, etc.) does not solve the issue. Unfortunately, inorganic additives are a temporary solution which destroy biology and degrade soil over time. Your soil isn’t lacking nutrients, it’s simply lacking the biology needed to make those nutrients available to your plants.

If your soil pH isn’t ideal for your crop, you need to balance the biology in order to alter the soil environment (pH included). While products such as fertilizers may demonstrate an initial positive reaction in your plants, they are water soluble and are typically leached out of the soil. Since they also damage the soil food web, the organisms will not be able to feed your plants using what is already in your soil. Therefore, you’ll feel pressured to apply further additives in the coming season.
